Southend United 2 - 0 Dagenham & Redbridge
St Johnstone's Paint Trophy
Attendance: 2965
On Tuesday night Dagenham & Redbridge travelled to Roots Hall
to play Southend in the St Johnstone’s Paint Trophy. Unfortunately the Daggers
were unable to carry on their recent good form and went down 2-0 to the
Shrimpers. This was their first defeat in five games.
Dagenham started the game well and after only 20 seconds they had
a great chance to take the lead but the Southend keeper pulled off a good save
down to his left from Brian Woodfall, who let fire from the edge of the box. Southend
nearly took the lead only a few minutes later when Assombalonga beat Lewington but only for
Femi to clear off the line. It didn’t take long for Southend to take the lead
and in the 17th minute through Ryan Cresswell powered a header past
Lewington.
Dagenham finished the first half the way they started but were
unable to beat Paul Smith who made a fantastic save from Matt Saunders who shot
from 25 yards out.
.
Both teams started the second half slowly and not many chances
were created. But after a mistake from Luke Wilkinson the ball fell to
Assombalonga who calmly put the ball in the back of the net. After this John
still made a triple substitution bringing on Gayle, Green and Williams and this
seemed to spark some life into the away side who created a flurry of chancse
but were still unable to open their own deadlock.
Dagenham will be hoping to bounce back from this loss when they
travel to Chesterfield at the weekend and carry on their good form in the
league.
